A Hume Guide to the Scottish Borders # 1
The idea of escaping the daily drudge in favour of time out in splendid isolation lives large in the collective imagination. The quiet restorative power of slowly discovering a new landscape on foot, bike, or boat cannot be underestimated.
It’s unfortunate then, that arranging the perfect country retreat so often entails late night, eye-bleeding sessions in front of a flickering computer screen and the nagging suspicion that it won’t be worth the effort. It would be all so much easier if we had a trusted friend to make recommendations and point us in the right direction. Wouldn’t it?
We certainly think so, and that’s why we’ve put together the A Hume Guide to the Scottish Borders. After all, as we may have mentioned before, the Tweed Valley is our stamping ground, and we take a certain pride in sharing what we know.
In this, our first post, we’ll focus on finding the perfect bolthole. So, to save you the trouble of Googling your life away, let’s just say here and now, that property letting specialist Crabtree and Crabtree (C&C) is the place to go.
C&C feature properties throughout the Tweed Valley, north and south of the border, by our beautiful beaches, on our hillsides, riverbanks, and in our towns and villages. From Country Houses, to exquisite snugs, every C&C property has Homes & Gardens good looks, an enviable location and benefits from optional extras such as fishing, shooting, transport, childcare, catering and wine delivery, plus in-house chef.
Just looking at pictures of the Boat House, at Middleton Hall is enough to send work weary, wage slaves scuttling for their credit cards. It’s worth contriving a romantic anniversary simply for the privilege of visiting this magnificent stilted idyll, to gaze in languorous appreciation over your own private lake and give in to the quiet luxury.
Closer to home here in Kelso – sitting plum on the banks of the Tweed overlooking the famous Junction Pool – is the marvelously stylish Junction House. This is a place to gather friends and family, to revel in style and recover with a sedate walk along the Cobby.
Walking the Cobby is something of a Kelso institution and one of the many things we’ll cover in our next post, Long Weekend in the Borders – our itinerary for the perfect weekend.
If you have recommendations, or simply treasured memories of the area, please post a comment and help us all get the best from the Borders.
