Vannessa Murray and Hannah Fairgrieve attend Drapers Next Generation Event

Earlier in the year A Hume Ladieswear Buyer, Vanessa Murray was named on Drapers’ annual list of fashion retail’s rising stars, 30 Under 30. This hotly contested accolade is awarded to 30 young professionals in recognition of their career development, key achievements and future potential.

The 30 under 30 awards are part of the Drapers Next Generation initiative aimed at rewarding, developing and encouraging new talent into the industry. Each year they also host a Drapers Next Generation event aimed at supporting those in the early stages of their careers, or looking to move into the fashion industry.

Inspiration For Future Talent

This year, the event was held in London, on 14 April. Vanessa, and A Hume intern and model, Hannah Fairgrieve made the trip to hear from inspirational speakers such as Jigsaw chief executive Peter Ruis, Berwin & Berwin managing director Simon Berwin, The White Company clothing director Barbara Horspool and a panel of the 30 under 30 winners.

Each of the speakers and panelists aimed to pass on the benefit of their experience and offer an insight into the opportunities available within the fashion industry. For Hannah – a Fashion Management student currently on placement at A Hume, who hopes on completion of her degree to forge a career in fashion – the timing couldn’t have been more perfect (see Hannah and Vanessa do Pure).

The event has the look and feel of a very high end careers fair, offering networking opportunities many young graduates would give the right arm for.

Summing up the day, Vanessa said:

‘It was fascinating to learn about the career paths of each of the speakers. There was lots of clear, practical advice but the over-whelming message of the day was, be true to yourself, choose a career you’re passionate about then work hard at it. It’s a sentiment I couldn’t agree with more.’

– She also said the ice cream was delicious!
