Kelso Races Ladies Day 2014 - Racing and Style in Abundance

Kelso Races Ladies Day 2014 – Racing and Style were in abundance this year and A Hume Country Clothing were thrilled to be part of the action.

Defying predictions of thunder and lightning the sun shone, with one short torrential exception, for Ladies Day at Kelso Races, officially the UK’s friendliest racecourse and on 26th May, undoubtedly Britain’s best dressed.

Best Dressed Ladies Finalists, Kelso Races 2014

Archie Hume and A Hume Ladieswear buyer, Vanessa Murray were there to judge Best Dressed Lady and Couple, an event sponsored by A Hume with the support of Magee of Ireland. Archie a fitting example of a race day gent in his own Magee Tweeds and Vanessa elegantly mixing bespoke, boutique and high street in a Nicole Miller linen and silk dress cleverly teamed with a cream jacket from New Look and shoes from Dorothy Perkins. She designed her take on the classic pillbox hat herself and realised her creation with the help of local milliner and Best Hat sponsor Karen Reid.

The stakes were high with each winner promised a tweed jacket from Magee of Ireland.

Best Dressed Lady

There were ten finalists in each category and Vanessa made it clear that although deciding who made the cut was an enjoyable job it was far from easy:

“Everybody there had made a huge effort and all ten of our ladies finalists looked stunning. Our ladies represented all ages and there was even an aunt and niece combo, one of whom had won best dressed two years ago. I loved the colours this year, especially the yellow colour block dress and navy jacket, and the vibrant floral print dress.’

‘There was such a glorious mix of styles, textures and colours. All our ten Best Dressed Ladies looked amazing.”

Winner: Best Dressed Lady, Emily Rogers from Edinburgh, with Archie Hume and Vanessa Murray.

Winner: Best Dressed Lady, Emily Rogers from Edinburgh, with Archie Hume and Vanessa Murray.

The winner Emily Rogers, from Edinburgh wore a glamorous cream palazzo jumpsuit with a large picture hat and tailored jacket, all High Street purchases. Vanessa said that both she and Archie were impressed by the simplicity and effortless chic of Emily’s outfit.

Best Dressed Couple

As Vanessa learned last year on Ladies Day, judging Best Dressed Couple can be a hazardous business, involving first establishing if the lady and gent in question are indeed a couple? Entry is automatic and Vanessa and Archie select finalists as they wander the racecourse with a critical eye, approaching likely contenders unbidden. The potential for embarrassment is ever present – a ‘couple’ could quite easily be a father and daughter, wife’s friend and husband, or so much worse.

Winners: Best Dressed Couple. From left, Vanessa Murray, with winners Gary Dudgeon and Nicole Payne from Berwick and Archie Hume.

This year Vanessa and Archie felt they had a good handle on the dynamics and could approach candidates with confidence. Especially in the case of Best Dressed Couple Winners Gary Dudgeon and Nicole Payne from Berwick, as Vanessa says the clue was in their subtly coordinated outfits.

“Gary wore a tweed suit with a mustard gold overcheck and a mustard gold collar and Nicole wore a black and gold dress with a lovely hat by Karen Reid. We’d no idea the hat was Karen Reid when we approached them but it was so clear they’d made such an effort. They were beautifully put together and thoroughly deserved to win.’

‘All the candidates in Best Dressed Couple looked great and I really enjoy seeing couples look good together, there’s something special about making a shared effort.”

Best Hat

The Best Hat award was sponsored by Karen Reid Designs a local Scottish Borders Milliner whose order book has been filling up with commissions for Kelso, Ascot and weddings far and wide.

Her creations are totally unique and bespoke to the customer so it rather fitting that Karen awarded the prize to someone who shares her passion for making hats: Judith from Chesterfield who made her own deep mulberry felt hat to match her plum dress. We feel sure that Judith will enjoy spending her £200 Karen Reid voucher and that together they will create a fabulous hat.
