Sochi Style: Best, Worst and Weirdest

Sochi Style: Best, Worst and Weirdest

By -

It’s not over yet, but already Team GB have achieved their best medal haul at the Winter Olympics since 1936 and there have been unforgettable moments.

Jenny Jones bringing home the first ever Team GB medal won on snow in the snowboarding slopestyle; Lizzie Yarnold shredding the competition in the skeleton on a sledge called Mervyn – designed by her boyfriend, F1 McLaren designer – and in the last few minutes the Women’s Curling have just taken Bronze. Huge congratulations…..! And we’ve still got men’s curling to look forward to – could it be bronze for the women and gold for the men? We’ll soon find out….

Got to love those snowboarding girls, all gorgeous, beaming health, colgate smiles and awesome talent!Enni Rukajarvi, Fin (left), Jamie Anderson, USA (mid) and Jenny Jones, GB (right). Image source: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/263249540692989767/

But we know it’s not all about winning medals. It’s about style too!

So here’s some of best, worst and weirdest so far:

Happy, happy Lizzie cheered on by her Yarny Army.

Best again…

Nelli Zhiganshina and Alexander Gazsi of Germany doing their Paris Hilton meets the dorky Prof routine in the figure skating pairs. Class act. Figure skating finds it’s funny bone.

Silver Medal for worst Official Uniform – Sochi Volunteers

Would 25,000 people have volunteered to help at the Games had they known this is what they’d be wearing? It’s like the rainbow themed German outfit has been fed through a food processor, smudgy colours and a nauseating print.

Bronze medal for worst Official Uniform – Team USA

It is simply wrong for the richest country on the planet to dress its elite athletes up like something that can be bought in a Vermont gift store. Eugh! Cliched and kitsch.

And, another thing…..does your flag have to be emblazoned on everything? We have stars and stripes fatigue….

There’s been a fair bit of weirdness around at Sochi and we don’t mean Putin.

First there was Tonga. The Hawaiian shirt as a ski jacket. We’re just not sure. I mean we like it…but we’re not sure we should…and it’s definitely weird – but maybe, in a good way?

And then Staale Sandberch defied helmet head and Sage Kotsenburg treated us to his tongue on the podium. Yep, snowboarding slopestyle has arrived at the olympics.

Swedish freestyle skier Henrik Harlaut seemed intent on wearing his baggies to compete in the Olympics. He repeatedly treated crowds to a flash of his patriotic pants on several occasions during training and competition.

Still the Winter Olympics are no stranger to eccentricity – anyone remember a certain Edward Eagle?
