Where to buy Turkey & Goose

We’re spoilt for choice in the Borders. In Kelso, there’s Bridge Street Butchers for Geese and William Wylie for Turkeys. In Melrose, Martin Baird is the place to go.


Out of town people flock to, Alemill Farm Geese near Eyemouth. Contact for information and stockists.


Where to buy Ham & Pork

There a small pig farm in East Lothian that’s home to some very large and tasty rare breed pigs, Ballencrief Pork do the best Hams and pork in the country. Available at Ballencrief Farm Shop, Edinburgh & Haddington Farmer’s Markets and other stockists throughout Scotland.



Where to buy Fish

Smoked fish, salmon or trout is the perfect pre-feast nibble to sail you joyfully through the first glass or two of bubbles to the Christmas table. And as we all know Scottish salmon is hands downs, the best. Fish could practically jump out the river into The Tweed Smokery, Kelso. Their delicate artisan smoked fish is available at Pharlanne Deli, Kelso. Belhaven Smokehouse, near Dunbar is another source of good smoked fish, you can online or at the smokehouse shop.


Where to buy Treats

At Christmas the original Valvona & Crolla shop on Elm Row, Edinburgh turns into a grotto of temptation. Shiny baubles of marron glace sparkle and big jeweled crowns of Panettone glisten in their shiny wrapping. Rich dark Paneforte is perfect with coffee after a long boxing day walk.

How could you beat Fortnum & Mason? The classic vendor of Christmas delights in hamper form, this is a gift everyone should receive at least once in their life. Even if you don’t buy a hamper, serving Fortnum & Mason mince pies on Christmas Day is the next best thing to homemade.

No respectable Christmas table is complete without a hearty lump or two of good cheese. Standhill Cheesery, nr Hawick sell magnificent homecrafted cheeses from their farm shop and also at Hawick & Langholm Farmer’s Markets. They featured recently on the Incredible Spice Men.
