Barbour is a heritage British brand, founded in 1894 by John Barbour. Famous for their wax and quilted Barbour jackets, the brand has a strong emphasis on creating high-quality outdoor clothing for men and women. As well as jackets in a range of styles, we also stock practical shirts, fleeces and accessories. Our Barbour collection has everything you need for protection against the great British weather, whether for outdoor pursuits or everyday wear.
Barbour is one of the most iconic and trusted brands in British design, and one of very few companies to hold three Royal Warrants. Its story began in 1894, when Scotsman John Barbour saw a gap in the market and set up the business in South Shields, making waterproof, hard-wearing outerwear for fishermen and workers in the North East of England. Barbour’s waterproofed wax jackets soon became popular with the Tyneside fishing community, and later, country sports people – affirming the brand’s rich heritage in the British countryside. Throughout its 125-year history, Barbour has adapted to meet a wider range of customers, while staying true to its country roots and quality manufacturing.
Today, Barbour is a 5th generation family-owned business and its headquarters remain in Simonside, South Shields. Its transformation to a global lifestyle brand has been led by Dame Margaret Barbour, Chairman for over 40 years, and daughter Helen Barbour, Vice Chairman since 1997. The brand’s product range has expanded to include knitwear, accessories, footwear, full lifestyle clothing collections, and even a dog range. Although Barbour products are made around the world, its classic wax jackets are still manufactured by hand in the Simonside factory.
Barbour’s signature wax jackets include the Border and Beaufort thornproof jackets that incorporate practical features as well as style. The Beaufort jacket, for instance, has a full-width rear pocket which is lined with wipe-clean Nylon, two large bellow pockets, and moleskin hand-warmer pockets. Barbour jackets are now worn by everyone from farmers to fashion royalty, and are a popular choice at music festivals thanks to their weatherproof qualities. The brand has several high-profile designer and celebrity collaborations. The actor Sam Heughan is Barbour’s first Global Brand Ambassador, and as well as wearing Barbour from a young age, he grew up a short distance from where founder John Barbour once lived in rural Galloway.
Barbour is an authentic British heritage brand for every generation. The brand’s commitment to quality manufacturing and design provides you with the assurance of longevity and durability every time you purchase – standards that are upheld by A Hume.
“A Barbour jacket to me, is a jacket you can always trust, it’s a forever jacket.”
