How to Wear Florals in the British Countryside

Last Updated on March 31, 2022 by Rachel Thomson

Wearing floral patterns in the countryside go together like peas and carrots. With designs inspired by English country gardens, moors scattered with poppies and nostalgic memories of making daisy chains on summer evenings. But sometimes choosing the correct pattern, colour and style can be intimidating and we find ourselves heading back towards the neutrals and plains.

How to introduce florals into your wardrobe

Be Bold

Sometimes you’ve got to go big or go home and the same applies to florals. Wearing bold prints with contrasting colours and large designs that are eye-catching is a great way to express your confidence and draw in many a compliment.

Subtle Patterns

Sometimes a dainty, ditzy floral pattern is all you need. These tend to be smaller in design and usually in more neutral colours, resulting in a very sweet style.

Add a touch

When in doubt accessorise! A great and easy way to integrate florals into your wardrobe is via your accessories. Scarves are a great way to add a pop to your outfit.

What to avoid when wearing florals

Don’t over complicate the colour scheme

If you decide the bold route is for you, style your shirt, trousers, or scarf with simple items. This way avoiding a clash of colours. Try choosing a colour from the pattern that you can tie in with, that will not clash. The best colours are often found in the small details of the pattern, so you are not blocking yourself in one main vibrant colour. Although exceptions to this would be neutrals such as black, navy, and white.

Never mix and match florals

We would never recommend mix and matching floral patterns. Your outfit would be too busy and your floral pattern wouldn’t stand out the way it is intended to.

Stay away from spots and stripes

Similar to avoiding more than one floral pattern you should also stay away from styling your floral shirt, trouser, jacket, dress with stripes or spots. The exception to this would be accessories, which can be styled with different patterns.

How to style florals by product type

Styling Floral Trousers

Floral trousers are a statement. Style with a plain top that is simple in colour and style, or a crisp white shirt. Depending on the occasion keep your footwear and accessories simple also.

Styling Floral Shirts and Blouses

When styling a floral blouse, it depends on the occasion and type of pattern. Bold, smart shirts look great with white jeans in the summer and a pair of wedges. Simpler prints such as ditsy florals look good with a pair of denim jeans or skirt for a casual look or a navy chino for a smarter occasion.

Style Floral Scarves

A floral scarf can finish off any outfit. They look great layered under a summer jacket, tied round a handbag for an extra touch, or styled in your hair for a bit of floral flair.

Styling Floral Dresses

Floral dresses are a great spring/summer addition to your wardrobe. Style with simple footwear such as the Penelope Chilvers or Fairfax and Favor Trainer.
