From the beginning in 1929, A Hume has offered a full tailoring service, each year we make hundreds of garments; jackets, trousers, kilts, trews, work and lounge suits.
We are all individuals, there’s always some physical quirk that makes us, us; that broken collar bone when you came off the horse that altered your perfect symmetry; your stronger right arm, the result of enduring hours struggling for victory on the tennis courts.
It’s not even necessary to boast such anecdotal physical uniqueness – no one is a standard fit; long back, short back, slim chest, or strong, we are all as exceptional as snowflakes, and nothing bought off the peg will ever compete with made to measure.
Some people have pockets deep enough to wear nothing but made to measure – and we can make jackets with deep pockets, we just can’t promise to fill them. For others, a specially commissioned kilt in the Clan colours is a right of passage, a 21st coming of age. Or made to measure may be the fulfillment of a long treasured desire to wear a one off, a jacket with a collar trim, cuff detail or pocket made to one’s own exact specification, in exclusive, bespoke cloth.
Each and every made to measure garment at A Hume begins with a consultation; we spend time discussing exactly what’s important to each customer. We consult on finish, buttons and lining, we take exact measurements and make sure we get it right. We understand that for customers made to measure is an investment.
After an initial fitting, as minimum there will be a further fitting, possibly two, at intervals of 2, or 3 weeks. It takes time to ensure the perfect fit, each pin placed with care and attention to detail, every stitch sewn with patience. Jacquie Nairn, our seamstress, has been with us for 26 years and her expertise in evident in every garment that leaves the shop and every customer that returns.
