Royal Windsor Horse Show – 70th Anniversary

It really is a time of feast for equestrian types: after all the excitement of Badminton – we’ll be posting an update later – comes the Royal Windsor Horse Show, this year celebrating its 70th Anniversary.

The RWHS began in 1943 as an effort to boost morale on the home front and raise funds for the war effort. Today it is renowned as one of the most important competitive fixtures on the showing, jumping, and carriage driving calendars. This year has seen record entries, over 4000 entries to compete in the 174 classes.

As well as fierce competition – the video above is testament to the standards – it is a hugely entertaining spectacle and the crowd participation in events like the DAKS Mounted Games is electrifying. Pony Club teams from Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales compete to win at a frenzied pace, swinging round their mounts like balls on strings.

This year Sam Coltherd of the Duke of Buccleuch Pony Club will be competing in the Prince Phillip Cup Mounted Games on his, spins-on-a-dime pony Galaxy. At 14, this is the last year he’ll qualify for selection and told the Southern Reporter:

“Galaxy and myself picked up a second last year at a mounted games championship and we both know exactly what we are in for, so hopefully we can go one better this time.”

Good luck Sam. We’ll be watching.

Don’t forget Floors Castle Horse Trials Saturday 18th – Sunday 19th May. A Hume Country Clothing are proud to be sponsoring this event.
