The Looking Glass, Western Cape, South Africa

A seamless indoor/outdoor life beckons at this thoughtful, elegant house. The luxury here is understated. There are five bedrooms, all with en suites and panoramic views. All have access to either deck, patio or lawn.

The Looking Glass sits lightly on top of a ridge surrounded by fynbos with wrap-around views of Sinclair Nature Reserve, Outeniqua mountains and views of Noetzie Bay and the Indian Ocean.

Krsyna is an easy drive from Cape Town or Port Elizabeth.

Good to know: In-house catering is available on request. The Looking Glass sits within a world-leading eco development, spa, horse riding, tennis and golf, within striking distance.

The property directly accesses a steep small path, which within two minutes walk, will lead you to a beautiful small beach and to a wonderful walk in to the village of Kioni.

Good to know: The villa has it’s own powerful rib boat so you can scoot across the bay for morning coffee or explore the island’s coast and nearby port of Vathy.

Finca Los Alcornocales, Andalucia, Spain

This two bedroom Finca is set in the hills of Andalucia, close to the Moorish Peublos Blancos of El Colmenar and Gaucin. The traditional Finca is spacious and well furnished but the magic really begins outdoors. Owls, eagles, deer and wild goats share the Finca’s one-acre garden in the heart of the Alcornocales National Park.

Guests are encouraged to pick and enjoy the fresh fruits, herbs, salad and vegetables from the kitchen garden. There is also a small but perfectly formed swimming pool, designed to emulate a natural rock pool.  The property is off grid and all electricity is generated by solar power. In house cook available on request.

Good to know: This is rural escapism and you’ll need a 4WD to reach Finca Los Alcornocales but once there it’s unlikely you’ll be able to tear yourself away from the view across to the Rif Mountains of North Africa.

Palazzo Hedoné, Sicily, Italy

A 13-bed property in the heart of a Unesco heritage village, Palazzo Hedoné is a hedonistic palace fit for a Godfather. It was until recently a very exclusive boutique hotel, hence it’s luxurious legacy of in-house hammam, private beach house, outdoor and indoor swimming pools – with nifty sliding glass roof and multiple terraced gardens.

The terrace on the second floor has several shady Moorish lazing nooks. Up another level are the fantastic panoramic lawned gardens and outdoor heated pool overlooking the rooftops and church domes of Scicli’s centre and the surrounding hills.

Good to know: Pallazo Hedoné is fully staffed to five star standard. The private beach house is a 15 minute drive, on a stretch of soft, white sand close to Cava d’Aliga.

Snapper Lodge, Newport Sydney, Australia

Built on the waters edge with its own jetty and small sandy beach, Snapper Lodge is a quirky private hideaway set behind a stand of bamboo and under a canopy of shimmering trees.

The layout is open plan, with a king size bed, lounge, kitchen and bathroom. A second bedroom and bathroom are housed within an adjacent pavilion. The styling is vintage and bohemian, making Snapper Lodge a favourite with the glossy mags.

Good to know: Peace and seclusion only 45 minutes from Sydney. Surf boards and fishing reels included with the rental.
