The worst kept secret of the countryside is how amazing it is for your health and wellbeing. In comparison to their city counterparts, country folk tend to live happier lives in the long run, with clean air in their lungs and nature right on their back doorstep. A∙Hume is fortunate enough to be based in the beautiful countryside town of Kelso, so we know a thing or two about how countryside life changes you for the better.

 

1. Those Enchanting Countryside Walks

When we go for a walk in the country, we feel present in the moment and have a bit of time to collect our thoughts, de-stress ourselves from the situations we have left at home or work and appreciate the beauty around us. Spending time in green spaces is scientifically proven to boost your mood and has amazing effects on your overall health. Bonus points if you have a furry companion with you on your countryside adventures, since owning a dog gives you companionship, decreases your cholesterol and lowers your blood pressure when they tag along.

 

2. Fresh Local Produce on Your Plate

When we eat the instant sludge from the supermarket, we find ourselves falling out of love with what goes on our plate.  You can be surprised how much fast-food weighs you down both physically and mentally, and the countryside offers a treasure trove of foods to spark life back into our relationship with food. We have been to many a farmers’ market and drooled over the amazing selection of local produce on display. You are what you eat and when you eat local, you dine like a king.

 

3. Friendly Faces Everywhere You Go

It can be a stark comparison between the lonely sea of unknown faces in the city and the close-knit social network of the countryside. There is a long-held tradition of helping each other out and a sense of camaraderie in the country community. It is comforting to have neighbours that we feel we can rely on in tough times. In the slow pace of the countryside, we can enjoy the benefits of a social bubble at our doorstep (perks of wi-fi outages) and reap the rewards for our social health.

 

4. Wildlife in Every Nook and Cranny

While we don’t want mice in our cereal boxes, connecting with our local wildlife every day has amazing benefits. Nothing helps us to reconnect and feel emotionally fulfilled quite like feeding the hedgehogs visiting the garden or experiencing that breath-taking moment when a deer dances across your path (not going to lie, we feel like the main character of a book when that happens).

 

5. Finally Some Blooming Peace and Quiet

Despite the odd moo of a cow breaking the silence, nothing comes close to describing the ethereal quiet that you experience being in the countryside. Studies show that the noise of the city can lead to alienation, lack of sleep and stress from loud unnatural sounds. The quiet of the countryside has the ambience of twittering birds and the flowing of rivers, helping us reduce our stress levels and feel at peace within ourselves.
