A Hume Country Clothing has won the Best Independent Multichannel Operator and the coveted Independent Retailer of the Year, at the Drapers Independents Awards 2014, in recognition of the work of entrepreneurial independent business owners, Karen and Archie Hume.
The deserving winners of the Drapers Independents Awards 2014 were announced at a celebratory reception and luncheon on 17 September at The Brewery, London.
The Drapers Independents Awards have put the UK’s independent fashion retail sector firmly on the map, bringing together the very best of the industry for a glittering luncheon of recognition, celebration and networking. With 15 categories, the awards covered a wide range of achievements in fashion retailing.
After review by a panel of judges, made up of influential figures and experts from the independent retail sector, A Hume Country Clothing won, by unanimous decision, Best Multichannel Operator of the Year in celebration of the fact “they really understand how to do multichannel – they know how to best use Google and SEO, and are great with analytics. Another added, it’s fantastic on social media.”

In conjunction to the winning Best Multichannel Operator award A Hume Country Clothing were proud to win the coveted Best Independent Retailer of the Year. The judges commented “unusually, we were unanimous in deciding the winner of all winners. We would go so far to say we were passionate about the A Hume business, which embodies all the best aspects of the modern independent clothing retailer".
Archie Hume comments:
"It might be my name above the door but my contribution is just one piece in the puzzle. To have won Best Independent Multichannel Operator and Best Independent Retailer of the Year is recognition of the enormous talent, creativity and hard graft that not only our staff put into A Hume but of every person connected to our business. The agents and brands whose collections we sell, the guy who delivers the parcels – our success is not just down to the people who work for us but the people who work with us. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dubarry of Ireland for inviting us to join their table at the Awards and for their continued support.

Our town is looking great. We have fantastic independents in Kelso – shops, restaurants, hotels and cafés. Together their combined appeal helps us draw visitors from far and wide. These awards and the recognition they bring is good not just for us, but for the whole town of Kelso."
The Drapers Independents Awards, one of the largest events of its kind, showcased some of the UK’s most entrepreneurial individuals and the most innovative retail businesses at a time when the giants of fashion retail are suffering falling sales and a lack of consumer confidence.
Research from The Local Data Company (LDC) shows, independents are leading change on our high streets and are in fact the best hope for its survival. In 2013 across the top UK 500 town centres there has been a net growth of 424 independent shops, growing 0.4%, while multiple stores showed a net decline of 209 units (LDC).
Eric Musgrave, Editorial Director, Drapers, said:
“The Drapers Independents Awards recognise innovation, reward success and offer independents the chance to network with some of the most renowned and influential names in the UK’s fashion retail industry. I hope that the Drapers Independents Awards will continue to support the growth of independent fashion retailers and in turn help secure the future of the British high street. Congratulations to all our finalists and winners. ”
