We have been around for almost 90 years so there's a fair bit of history. Arch Hume founded A Hume, Gentlemen's Outfitter, in 1929. He ran an entirely made-to-measure tailoring business and although we continue to offer a made-to-measure service, he could never have envisioned how his business would grow.
These days we sell the finest brands in country clothing locally to our loyal clientele in the Scottish Borders from our Kelso shops in The Square and Horsemarket, and worldwide to over 70,000 customers.
Arch Hume opens A Hume, Gentlemen's Outfitter, The Square Kelso. All suits and jackets are made-to-measure in-house by Arch's team of five highly specialised tailors using the finest tweeds and cloths. A service we offer to this day.
The start of our long association with Reid & Taylor Mill, at Langholm, who continue to supply A Hume with our exclusive Bladen Tweeds.
Jock Hume joins the business and eventually takes over from his father.
Jock Hume adds ready-to-wear collections to the traditional tailoring business.
A Hume begins its longstanding partnership with Magee and Bladen
A Hume celebrates its 50th Anniversary.
Archie Hume, the third generation, joins his father in the business.
Jock Hume dies and is succeeded by his son Archie Hume.
Archie Hume introduces Australian brand RM Williams, bringing a contemporary twist to the traditional offering.
Archie continues to expand the brand offering, adding Dubarry and William Lockie.
Archie's wife Karen joins the company to develop the ecommerce business. A Hume launches its first Ladieswear range and we expand our William Lockie range.
www.ahume.co.uk goes live - we're online and selling to customers all over the globe without losing our traditional values. We continue to offer free alterations by our in-house seamstress to all customers including those shopping online.
We've stocked Barbour for many years, but in '09 we greatly expand our range.

The A Hume Blog is launched www.ahume.co.uk/blog our way of staying close to those we value most, we introduce the Schoffel and Loake brand and we open our menswear and footwear shop at 22 Horsemarket, Kelso. Our mobile friendly (Smartphone) version of the website is launched offering our customers a seamless way to contact, browse and buy from A Hume.
Our mobile website gets smarter, faster, bigger and better. Customers seem to like it and now 14% of visits happen on the move. We install iPads in our Kelso shops allowing customers to interact with the website, blog, social pages and product related videos. We add Schoffel to our expanding Ladieswear range, We are shortlisted for 3 Awards in The Annual Herald Family Business Awards; Family Business of the Year, Customer Service Excellence of the Year and Business Innovation of the Year. We win the Customer Service Excellence Award of the Year. Work starts on our exclusive 85th celebratory limited edition A Hume 1929 - 2014 Tweed range for Men and Ladies.
Another vintage year for A Hume, we hit the big time nationally winning the Drapers Best Independent Multichannel Operator award and also winner, of winners Drapers Best Independent Retailer of the Year.
Our shop in The Square, Kelso benefits from complete refurbishment. The new look brings together the traditions we value with a bright, welcoming customer friendly feel and enhanced displays. Our new website goes online with improved design and navigation plus more interactive product related videos and infographics. We also launch our Limited Edition bespoke tweed collection for men and celebrate our 85th anniversary with a great big party.
In response to the increasing importance of our mobile site we commence a complete re-design to meet the needs of our customers and improve customer experience.
We win Best in Scotland at the Pure London Fashion awards and are also a finalist in the Best Multi Channel Retailer category at the Drapers Digital Awards.
Our pursuit of excellence is endorsed nationally as we are shortlisted for Multi-Channel Operator of the Year and shortlisted and receive highly commended in the Lifestyle Retailer of the Year at the Drapers Independents Awards.
We go on the road taking A Hume to the Scottish Game Fair. It's a rewarding experience and we will endeavour to add more events in 2016. We also welcome newcomers Fairfax & Favor, Crombie, Le Chameau, Indigo Ivy and Meindl in our continued effort to offer the very best names in international country clothing.
A winning team
Whilst A Hume has enjoyed a year of consistent progress: steady growing sales in store and online, and the introduction of a few carefully chosen brands that sit well within our collection of international country wear – the glory and the awards have been saved for our staff.
Not only did we win Retail Business of the Year at the Scottish Business Excellence Awards but our very own Vanessa Murray was recognised as one of the Drapers 30 under 30. After 10 successful years, we decided to make a major investment in a new e-commerce platform, which went live in August 2017.
Proud to celebrate small business
We were chosen as one of 100 businesses to be featured as part of Small Business Saturday. To mark this special #SmallBiz100 Feature day we organised a few competitions and celebrations to say thank you to all our loyal customers who have supported us over the decades.
Small Business Saturday is the UK’s most successful small business campaign that culminates in one big day for the UK’s 5.5 million small businesses on December 2nd. Each year, #Smallbiz100 highlights 100 small businesses, one each day for the 100 days leading up to Small Business Saturday.
Launch of new blog
Our new blog was launched in June 2018. A much more stylish affair all together and an update they we’re very pleased with. Have a look at the new blog here. We update this regularly with posts on anything and everything to do with Country Life and Lifestyle as well as various how to guides including the likes of how best to look after your new boots or dressing like a country gent or lady.
A winning formula
Drapers Magazine is the clothing industry bible, the number one provider of news, views, information and analysis for the sector. This year, A Hume is thrilled and delighted to be shortlisted in the Multi-Channel Independent Retailer of the Year (2018) category, with winners announced in September 2018.
A New Chapter
Archie and Karen Hume make the difficult decision to sell A · Hume Country Clothing to a local, Scottish Borders family. David Nuttall the Managing Director of William Lockie acquires A · Hume Country Clothing at the end of January. Like Archie and Karen, David has an appreciation for quality brands and a great understanding of manufacturing. David’s daughter, Rachel joins as the Managing Director of A · Hume having spent 7 years at William Lockie.
A · Hume Ladies Cashmere Range Launched
We launch our very own ladies cashmere range which is manufactured under the A · Hume label in Scotland.
Our Coffee Table Catalogue
Our first ever mail order catalogue is produced during the lockdown of 2020 and is posted through letter boxes all over the country in October 2020.
