Founded in Ireland

Dubarry of Irleland was established in 1937 as a co-operative company to create employment in the small town of Ballinasloe, in Galway on Ireland’s West Coast. Emigration was leading to a loss of skills in the area and Dubarry helped to keep craftsmanship in the town.

What’s in a name?

The owners, a local Chamber of Commerce and a family from Northampton, wanted to give the Company a European flavour to mark it out from other Irish brands. The name Dubarry was coined after a famous French courtesan and mistress of Louis XV, Madame du Barry, giving the name associations of exclusivity and luxury.

Inspired by Sea & Country

Dubarry quickly built a reputation for excellent workmanship in the design and manufacture of fine leather moccasin shoes. Later, to grow the business Dubarry took inspiration from County Galway’s sailing heritage, applying the same exacting skills to make sailing and deck shoes. Dubarry’s deck shoes became so successful that they are affectionately known as ‘Dubes’ to this day. Since then, Dubarry has also taken inspiration from its country roots, introducing the iconic Galway boot in 1997, which has become a staple for country lovers.

Dubarry’s Galway boot, is made from Dubarry’s signature DryFast-DrySoft™ leather and includes a GORE-TEX® waterproof lining, keeping your feet dry and warm in muddy, wet weather. The Galway has also been widely spotted on the feet of festivalgoers and celebrities. Tatler magazine once described Dubarry boots as: ‘stylish enough to wear in town, sturdy enough to sink into the shallows with a wet dog’.

Branching out into clothing in 2008, and later accessories, Dubarry has confirmed its status as one of the finest manufacturers of durable footwear and clothing and is still based in Ballinasloe today. Dubarry’s tweed range is crafted from 100% pure wool from Lovat Mill here in the Scottish Borders. At A Hume, we know the quality produced by Lovat Mill, as we also work with them to create exclusive tweeds.
