By embracing the very latest in technology alongside traditional craftmanship, the company has created a pedigree of the highest quality. We have a wide range of William Lockie knitwear for both men and women, including soft lambswool sweaters, merino jumpers, and cashmere sweaters and cardigans.
William Lockie has been creating the most luxurious knitwear from its base in the Scottish Borders since 1874. ‘Lockie’s’, as it is fondly known, was founded in Hawick by William Lockie after he seized the opportunity to buy manufacturing equipment from his former hosiery employer. Today, it is one of the oldest family run luxury knitwear companies in the Scottish Borders, remaining under ownership of the Thorburn family, who are direct descendants of Lockie.
Hawick is a town famed for its knitwear industry and the William Lockie mill remains on the banks of the Slitrig Water, a tributary of the River Teviot. The soft river waters are used with detergent to treat the wool fibres for maximum softness, ensuring only super soft garments are made.
William Lockie jumpers are crafted from the highest quality natural fibres. Traditional skills are combined with the latest technology to create beautiful garments in cashmere, lambswool, Geelong, merino and camelhair. Turning luxury yarns into exquisite apparel, William Lockie is renowned for producing the finest knitwear with a sumptuous feel. The brand has also mastered the art of creating knitwear for Savile Row tailors and global couture labels to exacting standards and with uncompromising attention to detail.
While competitors have moved to fully automated machine processes, William Lockie still has a dedicated hand-finishing team. After the machines have knitted the separate pieces that make up each jumper, the body linking process is carried out by hand. The nine separate pieces (arms, front, back, collar, cuffs etc.) are carefully hand-stitched to create a beautiful finished item. The best knitwear skills are crucial to Lockies and the company is proud to employ many skilled workers from the same local families who have been employed for generations, as well as investing in apprentice training.
